Subalpine Plants--Part 2

Pedicularis attolens, or little elephant's head is often seen in subalpine meadows This one is near the Blue Lakes road, south of Lake Tahoe.

Argemone munita, the prickly poppy, growing near the top of Monitor Pass.

Even on the Sierra's eastern slope there are extensive areas of wet meadow and marsh.

Penstemon heterodoxus var. heterodoxus, one of the many penstemons that grow in the Sierra, this one from the edge of a meadow just west of Sonora Pass.

Aquilegia pubescens, one of two species of columbine that grows in the Sierra. It can have a number of color forms, and this cluster is a hybrid with Aquilegia formosa. From a basin above Convict Lake.

Erigeron clokeyi in the Convict Lake area. The genus Aster and the genus Erigeron look very similar, and species of both genera grow in the Sierra Nevada.
